Implant prosthetic component compatibility guide

Compatibility is not decided by the implant brand but by connection geometry and platform diameter. This guide explains EFF's S.M.P. logic and how to reach the right component in three steps.

1. The connection decides, not the brand

One manufacturer sells several connections, and the same connection is used by several manufacturers. Before looking for a component, identify three variables: connection type (external hex, internal hex, morse taper or intermediate abutment), platform diameter and screw type.

  • External hex: flat interface with a protruding hex; regular platform Ø4.1 is the most common.
  • Internal hex / conical connection: conical seat with internal indexing.
  • Morse taper: conical friction fit with no perceptible play.
  • Intermediate abutment (multi-unit): the prosthesis seats on the abutment, not on the implant.

2. Reading the S.M.P. code

EFF's Multi Platform System codes each family with one letter and two digits: the letter is the connection group, the first digit the geometry and the second the platform. Once the system is identified, every component in that family shares the same interface.

3. Check before ordering

  • Confirm the platform from the surgical record, never from a visual estimate.
  • Check whether the case is implant-level or abutment-level.
  • Select the cuff height from the measured gingival thickness.
  • Validate the screw reference: the transfer screw is not the definitive prosthetic screw.
